# Scopes

> The folder tree from the terminal: create, file, move, and clean up

## scopes

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes                # the folder tree with per-folder counts
```

System folders (`uncategorized`, `global`) are marked; descriptions print next to their
folder. See [Scopes](https://docs.memloom.dev/concepts/scopes.md) for what a folder means to recall.

## scopes add

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes add personal-life/people
memloom scopes add projects/memloom --description "the memory engine"
```

Missing parents are created. The description is not decoration: the classifier reads it when
filing unscoped saves, so a described folder collects better.

## scopes rename, describe, move, rm

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes rename personal-life "Personal Life"
memloom scopes describe streaming "Twitch clips and stream moments"
memloom scopes move streaming personal-life    # re-parent
memloom scopes move streaming /                # back to the top level
memloom scopes rm old-folder                   # only when empty
```

Folders address by path or id. `rm` refuses a folder that still has subfolders, memories, or
documents; empty it first with `scopes set`. System folders refuse rename, move, and delete.

## scopes set, set-doc

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes set personal-life <memory-id> [<memory-id>...]
memloom scopes set-doc projects/memloom <document-id>
```

`set` moves whole version chains, so history never straddles two folders. `set-doc` moves a
document and every chunk in one transaction.

## scopes backfill

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes backfill --dry-run    # per-folder counts, nothing written
memloom scopes backfill              # apply, then classify the rest with the LLM
memloom scopes backfill --no-llm     # apply the mechanical pass only
```

Files every unfiled memory whose import provenance names a project into `projects/<name>`,
deterministically and without a model call. It never overrides a filing you made by hand,
re-running it is a no-op, and what it files the classifier skips forever. The remainder
(saves with no provenance) goes through the same classification pass an index run uses;
without `--no-llm` the command runs one for you.

Run `--dry-run` first: it prints exactly what the real run would do.

## scopes review

```bash theme={null}
memloom scopes review                # what sits in uncategorized, ids included
memloom scopes review personal-life
```

The correction loop after a backfill or a classification pass: list a folder, spot the
misfiled, move them with `scopes set`. The viewer's folder sidebar is the same loop with
multi-select.

## Filing and filtering elsewhere

```bash theme={null}
memloom save --scope personal-life/people --tags family "my sister lives in Krakow"
memloom recall --scope personal-life "plans with my sister"
memloom recall --scope "*" "everything about Krakow"
memloom context add --scope projects/memloom ./docs
```

A scoped recall searches the subtree plus `uncategorized` and `global`; browsing and `set`
touch just the folder you name.
